Smoke Rings
I like to write about the dreams I have on my blog, and I thought that it would be good to write about a recurring dream that I have and get opinions from my friends about what it may or may not mean.
I told Jay about this dream and we discussed meanings for awhile, so I will list our interpretations after I tell you what the dream is. The thing that frightens me about the dream is the fact that I believe that dreams represent what is going on in our lives and that they are a subconcious way of expressing pain/joy/fear/happiness/etc., and what I am doing in the dream in no way represents my reality.
In an overwhelming amount of my dreams, I am a smoker. This isn't just something that happens every once in awhile in my dreams...it happens all the time. I stand there and I smoke, and it feels very natural and okay.
Those of you who know me know that this is the exact opposite from who I am. Walking by/standing by a person who is/has been smoking makes me sick because I am allergic to smoke. The idea of black lungs and yellow teeth is also a huge turn-off.
So why in all my dreams am I smoking like nobody's business? Here are what Jay and I talked about:
1) I am a huge movie fan, and in the movies smoking is often used to glamourize an event or a character. Perhaps my obsession with movies has gone too far to a point where my obsession has carried over into the unconcious.
2) Smoking in my dreams is a way of me safely rebelling from authority. By smoking in my dreams I am doing something that I have been warned against my whole life and enjoying it, while remaining safe and healthy. The only question this brings up is: why smoking? I mean, there are many things that I have been warned against throughout my life...so why have I chosen smoking as my way of dream rebellion?
3) I went on a few dream interpreters and this is what they had to say about smoking in dreams:
Smoking a cigarette: Sometimes used to represent the power of habit or anxiety in your life. Smoke in a dream may suggest an intuition of danger, or intuitions about something - something in the wind. Smoking may represent restricted vision, cloud, screen, looking to hide certain feelings.
Does this mean that I am an over-anxious person and that smoking in my dreams is a way of me calming down and relaxing and basically ignoring all the everyday stresses in a subconcious way?
Well, if anyone has an opinion I would love to hear it. Right now I need to go smok - I mean take a shower. I meant to say shower. ;)
